You know that little widget area on the new YouTube One channel design under your featured channels that sometimes says “Popular” and sometimes says “Related?” This seems like a cool little feature that might get us all a little bit of promotion and subscribers here and there from other random channels right? Have you wondered why some say “Popular” and some say “Related” and what exactly factors into which channels have which widget? Well I just looked at a LOT of channels with the new layout and noticed a very concerning and eye opening trend. Keep reading, this gets interesting..

Eye Opening YouTube One Popular and Related Observation

The channels that have the “Popular” widget are almost always under 1,000,000 subscribers and all of the channels listed inside the widget are over 1,000,000 subscribers. Therefore in this case the smaller channels are promoting the bigger channels with this new little widget.

The channels that have the “Related” widget are almost always over 1,000,000 subscribers and of course the channels related to them also usually have over 1,000,000 subscribers. Therefore in this case the big channels are promoting other big channels.

Let’s Recap

Small channels are promoting BIG CHANNELS.

BIG CHANNELS are promoting BIG CHANNELS.

Hmm…

YouTube’s Priorities With the “Related” and “Popular” Widget

So where is YouTube’s priority here? I completely understand that the new YouTube One design features are, for the most part, made to help us all engage our viewers and be more widely accessible and I like that. However, will this new widget actually be beneficial to you? Yes, if you already have over 1,000,000 subscribers. Otherwise all us little people will simply be helping everyone with over 1,000,000 subscribers gain even more subscribers. Honestly it makes sense from a business standpoint that YouTube would want their larger channels to get even larger, but what about the little people?

What Now?

I want to clarify that I looked at a LOT of channels with the new design and the only time it didn’t hold true this way was for categories like education and such where there aren’t very many channels with over 1,000,000 subscribers and sometimes for channels from brands such as TV shows and such. It seems to almost always hold true for channels that happen to be in the “YouTube Community.” Also, 1,000,000 subscribers isn’t the magic number or anything, sometimes it’s just widely popular channels, but for the most part these popular channels have over 1,000,000 subscribers.

I understand there is a possibility that this may vary from computer to computer and not everyone will get the same results that I did when looking at channels so I may be wrong on this, and I SERIOUSLY hope I am. This is why I am going to ask you right now to look for yourself and see if you get the same trend with already popular channels having the “Related” widget promoting other popular channels and not so popular channels having the “Popular” widget promoting popular channels as well. Tell me in a comment below what you find!

So what do you think about this? Personally I believe this type of thing should be randomized and should always be changing so everyone gets a piece of the promotion pie! The related widget is all that really should be there, but to be completely honest it wouldn’t bother me if the popular widget showed up occasionally given that it was a random thing. If my observation is true, something seriously needs to be done about this quickly, especially since everyone will be forced to have this new design very soon. Agreed?
